Protein is a building block of cells throughout the body. It is necessary for healthy skin, nails, muscles, cartilage and blood. Protein helps to build and repair bodily tissues, and it is used to produce hormones and enzymes. When you eat protein for breakfast, you will feel more energized and ready to take on your day. You are also more likely to feel full longer, due to your gut releasing peptide YY, a hormone that tells your brain “Hey, I’m full”.
According to interesting research published in the International Journal of Obesity, participants who ate a protein-packed breakfast ate 26 percent fewer calories at lunch than those who ate a calorically identical meal with less protein.
What can you eat?
Eggs are a great way to start the day. They’re loaded with protein and vitamin D, plus hard-to-get choline, a nutrient that may curb anxiety and boost memory.
Salmon contains both high quality protein and the long chain omega-3 fats EPA and DHA. These omega-3 fats are most well-known or their ability to improve heart health but they also inhibit muscle breakdown while increasing the anabolic capacity of amino acids. It supplies iron, zinc, niacin, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12, in addition to a whole host of other nutrients you need for good health.
One of my favourite breakfasts is 2 pieces of gluten free rice bread, spread with hummus or avocado, and topped with spinach leaves, smoked salmon and 2 poached eggs. What a treat!!
