Did you know that by getting your children outside and engaged in physical activities, you will increase their ability to focus and concentrate?
Studies show that children who exercise on a regular basis will have better grades, better concentration and sleep better.
When we participate in physical activity it increases the blood flow throughout our body including the brain. This increased blood flow allows the cells of the brain to better connect with one another.
And the exercise doesn’t need to happen every day for a required time, to pay of. One study that was performed, found that children who exercised for just 20 minutes before a math and reading comprehension test, scored higher than those who hadn’t exercised.
I think with the way our society is moving forward, we are finding more and more, that children are being taught in a very sendentary way, and can spend many hours in seated positions, and not moving their bodies, or engaging with them. Its definately impacting their awarness of their body and how its designed to move, as well as leading to focus and concentration issues. Long term this could lead to poor academic performance, lack of desire and passion for learning, postural issues, greater chance of injuries, poor self drive, and possible weight issues, amongst many other things.
So if you find that you have a child who is struggling to focus or concentrate, try setting aside a small amount of time daily if you can, where you all be active together. And you don’t necessarily have to think of structured exercise, but more fun stuff, like playing cops and robbers around the house, jumping on the trammp, tag, handball etc…..
I also find its a great way to teach the children that exercise doesn’t have to be painful but rather can be lots of fun 🙂
